The Bridge of Sighs

« 1 of 2 »

The Bridge of Sighs or Ponte dei sospiri is one of many bridges in Venice, Italy. It passes over the Rio o Canonica Palazzo and connects the old prisons to the interrogation cells of the Ducal Palace. Its name refers to the sigh expressed by the prisoners brought before the judges, as they look at Venice for the last time. It was the last image of freedom for those who would end their days in prison.
