Passages, an action-research program in partnership with the cities of Barcelona, Montevideo, Shanghai, Toronto, Tours, Santiago, Buenos Aires, Valparaiso, Paris… for the construction of in situ “demonstration” passages. Competitions, academic workshops, research groups, lectures and artistic events culminating in the international exhibition in 2016.

Six European competitions of ideas open to multidisciplinary teams
Organized by Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona in collaboration with the Col·legi d’Arquitectes de Catalunya.
Timetable: Three competitions announced on October 21, 2014 (sites 1a and 1b); November 20, 2014 (sites 2c and 2d); and December 19, 2014 (sites 3e and 3f); announcement of results in March 2015

The site: between the Besòs and Llobregat rivers, in the municipalities of Badalona, Montcada and Reixac, between Ripollet and Cerdanyola, Sant Cugat del Vallès, between Molins de Rei and Sant Vicenç dels Horts and Hospitalet de Llobregat: passages to be reopened, converted, designed under infrastructures, on motorways, between parks and railway lines…
The challenges: to design small, immediate and strategic interventions which will connect metropolitan areas.

The site: how to convert a passage under the coastal railway into a welcoming public space to facilitate local access to the sea?
The challenges: crossing the railway line; reconnecting city, sea and river; designing the passage as a key component, a stage in the planned renovation of the area; turning it into an intermodal micro-hub

The site: What types of passages are needed for the eastern part of the Expo 2010 site? How to prevent the site becoming an urban enclave? How to improve accessibility and porosity, provide alternative routes within the site and connecting with the surrounding neighborhoods (Expo Axis and services to the west, Huangpu River and Bailuanjing Path to the east, housing to the south and the riverbanks to the north)? How to create a genuine, lively, urban neighborhood, facilitate mobility for residents, workers, local people or tourists, from the Metropolitan scale to walking and cycling?
The challenges: to identify strategic points in a developing area under construction and propose passages of different kinds for construction.

The challenge: On an emblematic site that highlights the crossing opportunities of an urban highway, the competition provides the realization by the winning team of a trigger project for a longer process to link Tours & Saint-Pierre-des-Corps territories beyond the A10.

Short-film competition in Africa: filming African passages

The chosen film projects will be shot at training workshops in Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Mozambique, Tunisia, Senegal, and also in Ivory Coast, Cameroon and Congo.
