Call for short-film projects : 30 entries

“Filming passages in African cities”, launched in 8 countries of the African continent

10 minutes maximum of fiction, documentary, animation, experimental

Candidates from Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso/Mali, Mozambique, Senegal and Tunisia.

WHO IS THE COMPETITION OPEN TO?

▪ Film students (for all educational levels)
▪ Young, self-taught filmmakers who have already made at least one film, living on the African continent and under 35 years of age.

The candidates must live in the country for which they register and commit to participating in the whole creative workshop if they are selected

Timetable

  • Friday 30 January 2015: opening of the competition site
  • Wednesday 15 April 2015, midnight (Paris time): limit date for entry of the film projects
  • End April 2015: international jury – selection of 2 or 3 projects per country.
  • May-November 2015: production workshops in each participating country
  • Beginning of 2016: public screening, final jury at the international Passages conference and production of a “box set”
  • 2016-2017: screening of the films

HOW TO APPLY?

The application file includes:

  • the registration form completely filled (in annex)
  • a 10-line text describing the project
  • a memo of intent which includes the planned cinematic treatment (working hypotheses)
  • the applicant’s professional and personal history  (not a standard CV but a personal form)
  • an extract (3-4 minutes) of already completed work  (MOV, Avi or MKV format)
  • high resolution digital photo of the passage the candidate intends to film (digital, 300 dpi)
  • photocopy of the ID card or passport

A mail will be sent to the candidates to confirm the reception of their candidacy within 48 hours after reception.

Duration of the short-films: 5 to 10 minutes

Genres: fiction, documentary, experimental, animation

HOW THE FILM PROJECTS ARE SELECTED?

An international jury meet after April 15, 2015 to select 2 or 3 projects per country.
(A common workshop organized in Mail will train a maximum of 4 films for the competition in Mali and Burkina Faso).

PRODUCTION OF THE SELECTED PROJECTS AT WORKSHOPS LED BY TRAINING STRUCTURES

The selected candidates will receive in May 2015 the complete programme for their participation in the creative workshop of their country. The objective is to support the making of the film that should be ready at the end of 2015.

The workshops are structured into five phases: writing, rewriting, shooting, editing and postproduction, alternating between group and individual work and combining theoretical and practical training.

Training structures: Béjaia DOC (Algeria), Merveilles production (Benin), Les Films de Djabadjah (Burkina  Faso),  Premiers  Films  Production  (Mali),  FIDADOC  (Morocco),  16mm  filmes  (Mozambique), Suñuy Film (Senegal), La Caravane Documentaire (Tunisia)The specific places for the workshop will be confirmed in May 2015.
